Northern Ireland: Vandals damage Adventist church

Londonderry/Northern Ireland | 08.05.2006 | APD | International

Vandals have caused damage estimated at about £1,000 [€ 1.470] to a church in Londonderry, according to a BBC News report. Roof tiles and a church sign were damaged at the Seventh-day Adventist Church (58 Prehen Road) in the Waterside area of the city.

The most recent attack, which occurred either late on May 5 or in the pre-dawn hours of May 6, resulted in damage to church roof tiles, graffiti being sprayed on the exterior brick walls, and chipping of several letters on the church sign.

Graffiti was also sprayed on the walls. Pastor Anton Kapusi said the church sign would be impossible to replace. "The sign was very expensive. We are not able to replace it so we have to leave it as it is," he said.

Pastor Kapusi said the local Adventist church with 24 baptized adult members is small and exists "just by our own donations". "The sign has been donated by a person not from Northern Ireland but from the States," he said.

Northern Ireland Adventist Church belongs to the Irish Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. This protestant mainstream Church has had a presence in Ireland since the 1890's and now has over 11 congregations and several small groups worshipping all over the island.
